For Our Recipients

Wings of Mercy accepts patients with finances that make it impossible or extremely difficult to pay for transportation on commercial airlines.  

Patients needing air transportation to a medical facility must meet certain criteria to be eligible for Wings of Mercy services. These include medical need, physical condition, and financial ability.

Basic Patient Requirements

By way of summary, our patient requirements are:

  1. A doctor must attest that treatment is necessary, the patient is medically stable, and whether  a   pressurized aircraft is required. 

    1. The Doctor must sign a Wings of Mercy Medical Certification form

  2. The patient must sign a Wings of Mercy waiver

  3. Other patient requirements include:

    1. Receive treatment at a recognized medical center within 600 miles of eastern Michigan

    2. Provide ample notice of travel dates

    3. No smoking while in flight

    4. Observe fluid restriction prior to flight

    5. Comply with Wings of Mercy luggage restrictions -- review our luggage policy (PDF format)

    6. Arrange for own ground transportation at destination

    7. Family member(s) can fly if space is available

Organ Transplant Patients -- IMPORTANT INFORMATION:                            

Wings of Mercy, East Michigan is an all-volunteer organization.  We are best equipped to assist transplant patients with appointments BEFORE the transplant and care AFTER the transplant surgery itself.

Wings of Mercy, East Michigan IS NOT equipped to handle very short notice missions, such as flights for the organ transplant itself. 

Wings of Mercy East Michigan CANNOT be a transplant candidate’s
primary means of transport for the transplant surgery.  

Transplant candidates are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to find another primary means of transport for the transplant surgery, or consider moving to the site of the scheduled transplant surgery.
